10. Stargazing at Spicers Hidden Vale

Must Do Things in Ipswich

Take the time to visit Spicers Hidden Vale. While most people visit for the stunning scenery, hatted restaurant and lux accommodation, there’s another reason to visit: stargazing. At night you’ll see a fantastic display of stars as there is little to no light pollution from major cities to block your view.

There’s a multitude of mountain biking (MTB) tracks you can ride at Hidden Vale Adventure

Park, but the one we love is 500 Above. It’s the longest continuous descent in South East Queensland and its name alludes to its height – 500m above sea level. It takes 15 minutes to ride down, but much longer to climb (you can book a shuttle to the top though). Not for the faint of heart or inexperienced.

Head to Ipswich’s favourite attraction, the Ipswich Nature Centre, the only free zoo in South East Queensland, visit Queensland’s largest herd of llamas at The Llama Farm or pat and feed the farm animals at EWE Nique Hobby Farm.

Standing at an impressive 679m,

Flinders Peak isn’t for the faint-hearted. It’s higher than the Glass House Mountains and recommended for advanced hikers – but the effort is worth it for breathtaking views.

3. Walk the Ipswich Central Street Art Trail

Find 13 murals painted in laneways, on buildings and churches around the city. The art sits near cafes, music venues and art galleries right in the heart of Ipswich Central. A must-see while you’re in town.

4. Hike by day or night

And while we love hiking by day, there are night tours available. Experience the trails at White Rock – Spring Mountain Conservation Estate in another light on a

5. Attend a major event

8 spots around town that are a foodie's paradise.

By Josh Kerr, Ipswich Trekker

1. Monte Lane Small bites, wine and pizza can be found here. It's a bit European, with wines that you don't find everywhere, as well as cocktails and a selection of beers. It's a great spot for a relaxed, end of the week meal with friends. 2. Elderflower Café Elderflower Café is a cafe on the north side of Ipswich, conveniently nestled alongside a plant nursery and with easy access off Mount Crosby Road. They do a beautiful coffee blend made from their own unique brand of True Grit Coffee, as well as hearty breakfast and lunch options. The cafe itself is spacious, decorated lovingly with plants, murals and is even dog friendly. Jolie, the mastermind behind the operation, is a long-time Ipswich coffee connoisseur with years of experience in the art of the bean. 3. St. Shoebill In the Top of Town precinct, you’ll find this sweet little number, St. Shoebill. The cafe is known for its fresh seasonal menu, with influences from South-East Asia catering to all your breakfast and lunch needs. They’re situated within the highly esteemed and

heritage listed Ellenborough House, so the backdrop to your meal is an open set, high ceilinged dining space with a touch of old Ipswich charm. I would absolutely recommend St. Shoebill as one of my go to breakfast places for the entire family.

celebrating 181 years of history. Home to Tap’d bar, the largest bar in the southern hemisphere with 72 beers on tap, Char’d restaurant, which offers incredible wine and dine options within a gorgeous setting and Plantations coffee shop, which serves top quality coffee and a full cafe- style menu. The PA Hotel has previously been awarded Australian Regional Hotel of the Year at the Australian Hotel Awards and it’s not hard to see why. 7. Brothers Leagues Club Ipswich One of the leading entertainment destinations in the region, Brothers Leagues Club Ipswich features a large and stylish lounge area, alfresco seating and three separate bars. But we’re not here for all that good stuff, we’re here for Shamrocks restaurant. Guided by Executive Chef Neil Smith, Shamrocks seamlessly blends classic club favourites with an array of high-end dishes that push the boundaries of what a club experience can offer. We're talking chicken schnitty at one end of the table and a medium rare, grain fed porterhouse at the other. It’s a versatile spread that should satisfy all appetites. 8.The Cottage Restaurant Step into the charm of a beautiful heritage Queenslander and indulge in a fine dining experience with a modern Australian twist. The Cottage Restaurant is a unique little hideaway, tucked in amongst some of Ipswich's oldest residential buildings and ready to dish up the goods. From morning tea, to lunch, dinner and even tastings, The Cottage Restaurant is a culinary delight for any occasion. Bookings essential, check out their website for details.

4.The Rusty Nail Cocktails, wine, beer and tapas. The Rusty Nail has got the goods. Ipswich's very own underground bar is open from Thursday to Sunday with an extensive selection of interesting drinks and craft beers. It's the perfect spot for a date night or a gathering and one of the best watering holes around. There’s not much else I can say about Rusty's, it really does speak for itself. 5. La Parrilla Discover the flavours of South American barbeque at La Parrilla, a gourmet Latin takeaway in Ipswich. La Parrilla translates to ‘The Grill’ in Spanish, and true to form, there’s a fantastic selection of grilled meats, slow- cooked asado, wings, burgers and ribs on offer. Everything is served with traditional Latin sides and salsas for a truly authentic experience. I’d definitely recommend calling ahead because this stuff is fresh and cooked to order. 6.The Prince Alfred Hotel The Prince Alfred Hotel, known to locals as simply ‘The PA’, is not only a historic Ipswich icon but one of the oldest pubs in Queensland,

‘We have a great vibe in the restaurant. I have made so many different unique flavours from customer requests.’

The restaurant is a modern take on a retro milk bar with retro-swing mash up music playing, black and white tiles and traditional milk bar-style food. ‘My favourite ice cream to make is the salted caramel with bacon ice cream. I love every time a customer asks for a taste, the look on their face and saying, "wow this is actually really good!" Puts a smile on my face every time.’ The most popular flavour created is finger lime ice cream. The fresh ingredients are sourced from partners in the Scenic Rim: ‘We love making our own ice cream from fresh ingredients.’

‘UB's Milk Bar was abbreviated from Ungermann Brothers Milk Bar, such a mouthful,’ Mr Ungermann said.

Ipswich is Queensland's oldest provincial city with a rich and interesting history, which is celebrated each year during the Galvanized festival. But did you know you can explore the history and heritage of Ipswich year-round?

1

By Lady Brisbane Before I share my heritage itinerary, let’s stop for a minute to appreciate that Ipswich is renowned for its architectural, natural and cultural heritage and is a city that proudly preserves, and still operates, from many of its historical buildings and homes. Fun fact, there are more than 6,000 heritage- listed sites within Ipswich! Located only 30 minutes from Brisbane by car, and accessible by train, Ipswich provides a great day out. Begin your adventure by making your way to Marburg, located halfway between Brisbane and Toowoomba, approximately 56km from Brisbane. Start your day with a hearty breakfast or leisurely brunch at Tommy Smith Cafe situated within the grounds of the historic Woodlands of Marburg estate. The cafe (open Saturday and Sunday) overlooks the picturesque Marburg Valley and is named in honour of one-time owner of the property, Tommy Smith. The cafe itself was once the original chapel for the monks at the old St Vincent’s Seminary. From the menu you can enjoy the popular smashed avocado on toasted sourdough or satisfy your sweet tooth with pancakes or waffles, of course accompanied by a coffee, tea or a cold drink of your choice. Relax and enjoy your

selection as you take in the breathtaking views. After fuelling your body, it’s time to explore the majestic Woodlands of Marburg mansion. Built in 1889, the plantation-style house sits proudly within the estate. With sweeping verandahs and decorative iron lacework, the mansion and grounds are a treasure trove to explore as you step back in time to the days when owner Tommy Smith and his wife Mary Stuart occupied the home. Tours are available on weekends and I highly recommend taking the time to explore the grounds of the mansion, don’t leave without taking a look at the 19th century chapel, grotto and cemetery. The small rural town of Marburg, just off the Warrego Highway, is worthwhile visiting for a look at ScotlandYard Antiques , a visit to The Soul Nook Collective or a bite to eat at the Marburg Hotel , standing proud since 1879. Next, head to the centre of Ipswich for a look at the grand St Mary’s Catholic Church , or a quiet browse through Ipswich Art Gallery or perhaps relax and enjoy a drink at Pumpyard Bar and Brewery , located on the site that once supplied water to the City of Ipswich. Finish your heritage adventure with dinner at the historic Bakehouse Steakhouse . Circa 1875 the site was once home to Halley’s Bakery and you can still see the original bakery ovens, from the 1800s, located within the restaurant. Bakehouse Steakhouse, like the name suggests, specialises in steak and be assured that the quality of steak is excellent. I highly recommend a visit for your steak fix, especially if you are a t-bone or rib fillet lover. In fact, I’d travel from Brisbane for their steak. After dinner, if you feel you need a sweet end to your day, stop by UB’s Milk Bar for a gourmet, locally made ice cream. As the sun sets on the day and my heritage itinerary comes to a close, if the thought of travelling back to Brisbane sounds like hard work, there are a number of overnight accommodation options available including heritage homes like Cumquat House , Woodlands of Marburg and Urban Getaway .

With more than 6,000 heritage-listed sites, it’s easy to see why Ipswich is called the heritage city.

Here lovingly restored homes and buildings create beautiful pockets of history around the city, but for the owners of these properties it’s often a labour of love to keep them ageing gracefully. Craig and Esther Trapp embarked on their own heritage restoration back in 2020. Now the couple own Urban Getaway a short-term accommodation business with three heritage houses in Ipswich. They started with a Californian bungalow-style property that was once home to Urban Day Spa, which Mrs Trapp ran. The skin spa can still be found in a boutique studio space at the rear of the property. However, the main use is short- term accommodation by tourists and sporting teams including motorsport royalty coming to compete in the city. The transformation from day spa to accommodation came during Covid lockdowns, when the once thriving business needed a new direction. In addition to being a day spa, the property had a previous life as a bed and breakfast and armed with this knowledge the Trapps took on the task of renovating the five- bedroom, five-bathroom property, built in 1926, into a place to stay once again. Mr Trapp said the property had undergone several renovations over the years including adding a front deck, an ensuite in every bedroom, and the addition of a first-floor apartment.

‘While steeped in history, 17 Brisbane Road, Newtown boasts modern luxuries, including a rejuvenating sauna. This harmonious blend of past and present offers guests a truly immersive and enriching experience,’ Mr Trapp said. ‘It’s a style that seamlessly marries character and comfort.' Their successful venture into accommodation providing has now seen them partner with two further owners with similar heritage properties in recent years. The Urban Getaway property portfolio now includes a six-bedroom, three-bathroom 1910 colonial-style home with a claw foot bath, picket fence and detailed fretwork. There is also a four-bedroom, two-bathroom Queenslander, built around 1914, with wrap around decks, and detailed fretwork inside. Taking the time to renovate the properties to include all the modern luxuries tourists could want, the owners transformed the houses into beautiful homes travellers can stay in, and connect with heritage, in Ipswich's historic inner suburbs. While they love Ipswich, the Trapps (pictured) embarked on a journey around Australia with their two kids, fully running the short-term accommodation business on the road beginning in 2022. They employ a local team who care for the properties and keep them in top shape for travellers to enjoy. ‘We are thrilled to offer beautiful heritage homes for people to enjoy when they travel to Ipswich with family or friends, to attend events, work and enjoy everything that this great city has to offer. We recommend travellers stop into St. Shoebill , Fourthchild Café & Restaurant , Bakehouse Steakhouse and The Cottage Restaurant when visiting Ipswich to experience the best dining available in Ipswich.’

Accessible activities t h a t e v e r y o n e c a n e n j o y

Having lived in Ipswich since he was little, accessibility advocate Grandall Manning, knows some of the best places to visit. Instead of only looking through a lens of a great experience, the Disability Support Worker and DCA Mentoring Supports co- owner highlights places that are accepting and safe for his clients. Grandall Manning is passionate about accessibility and inclusivity in the community. Originally Mr Manning’s family emigrated from South Africa to Australia when he was only two years old, but he considers himself Aussie and now an Ipswich local. 'I like this city. Ipswich is not the same as when I was growing up, it’s changing and developing,' Mr Manning said. 'I’ve had fun times here, I’ve grown up here and most of my friends are in Ipswich.' Mr Manning wasn’t always a support worker, before he got into the field, he was a DJ and he combines his love of music with support services. 'Music transcends everything. I don’t see myself as just a support worker. I’m a capacity builder.' Mr Manning said he usually heads to places that make his clients feel like they are accepted – that 'serve great community'. 'Half the battle is they want to feel accepted. Inclusion is a big part of accessibility.' His ultimate dream is to be able to take clients to locations where accessibility isn’t just an afterthought.

Q&A WITH GRANDALL MANNING

Q. What’s your favourite place to see live music?

Q. Where do you go to experience the outdoors? A. Queens Park and the Ipswich Nature Centre. I used to bring my clients from Logan here to experience it. At the Orion Lagoon and Robelle Domain, there’s accessible walkways and pathways which are a godsend for people with difficulties walking. There’s also markets there which I love going to. Bushwalks can be dangerous for those with difficulty walking, but I used to love going to White Rock – Spring Mountain Conservation Estate when I was younger.

A. I love live music. Wherever there’s live music I’ll go. The Orion Hotel is good. Falvey’s Sunday sessions are also great, I often take my clients there. Sometimes there’s music events at the showgrounds. I also like the Hotel Metropole and Banshees Bar & Artspace. Brothers Leagues Club is also a great place to see live music and have a drink or two. Q. What’s your favourite thing to do in Ipswich? A. Go to car shows and visit Queensland Museum Rail Workshops – the museum is very interactive. My clients love all the tactile things to do there. I also like to go to the new library. It’s interactive, quiet, free and it offers the chance to explore at your own pace. I also like exploring the thrift shops and collecting hats. There’s plenty of great Op shops here. Q. Where’s your favourite place to eat? A. Redbank Plains Town Square. There’s a lot of options all in one spot. We were also on the hunt for the best Bahn Mi in Ipswich, it's at Bun Bun Bao.

I also love the fitness equipment at Limestone Park.

Q. Where’s your favourite place to get a coffee?

A. A lot of my clients are coffee fanatics, so I’ve been to a lot of coffee shops. My favourite coffee spot is Miss Jackson in Nicholas Street, they do a good Chai Latte. Or Wild Rose Cottage, Mrs Grazen is also good. They make people feel welcome. Rafter & Rose is great for sensory issues, the plants are very relaxing.

NATURE AT NIGHT Experience

By Josh Kerr, Ipswich Trekker

With over 8,500ha of conservation area to call our own, it goes without saying that Ipswich is the place to be for outdoor activities. But I bet you’ve never been out into one of our green spaces at night… enter night hiking in Ipswich and the wonderful opportunities that now present themselves when you book onto one of our guided after-hours experiences with Ipswich City Council.

City Lights Night Hike Amongst our more full-on expeditions, the City Lights Night Hike is one of the truest nature at night experiences we have to offer. Guided by nothing but our headlamps and headed deep into White Rock – Spring Mountain Conservation Estate, the City Lights Night Hike walk is a unique way to witness the bush come to life in all its nocturnal glory. This particular experience culminates at Main Ridge Lookout, overlooking thousands of distant lights, in an ocean of human habitation – surrounded by a stillness that only nature can provide. The City Lights Night Hike tour is a crowd favourite and bookings are essential, so book via the Discover Ipswich website to secure your spot.

Moonrise Night Hike Just like our last mention, the Moonrise Night Hike, available through Ipswich City Council, is one of the more demanding experiences on this list. But nothing good ever comes easy and the Moonrise Night Hike is no exception. Heading off from either White Rock – Spring Mountain or Flinders-Goolman conservation estates, the aim of the game is to summit either the Goolman Lookout or Main Ridge Lookout in White Rock at the very same time the moon rises above the ocean in the east. And boy is it worth it. The walk back to base is an experience characterised by the soft lunar glow of our nearest celestial neighbour and the entire evening is a rare twist on the already spectacular guided night hikes available in Ipswich.

INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS!

In Ipswich from January to November you can take part in a series of active outdoor events from cycling and mountain biking to adventure racing and trail running. There are options for the whole family in the upcoming Ipswich 100, Park2Park, Scenic Rim Trail Running Series or Escape Raid, just to name a few. With more than 8,500ha of open parks and conservation areas, it’s no wonder Ipswich is home to so many outdoor recreation and endurance events.

Nature at Night and Nocturnal Nature Detectives For families with young children, Ipswich City Council offers a kid friendly variant of the night-time bush experience in Nature at Night and Nocturnal Nature Detectives. These much smaller escapades into the wilderness are distinguished by their interactive and educational elements, bush stories, animal depictions and simplified explanations of the natural world all targeted towards a younger audience. Exploring White Rock - Spring Mountain Conservation Estate, these tours involve a walk and talk, stop start, hands on approach to learning – broken up by physical activity and spotlighting. These tours usually book out pretty fast, so grab a spot while you can. Night hikes can be booked via the tours page on the Discover Ipswich website and are released at various times of the year.
