8 Gorgeous churches to see in Ipswich Beginning back in 1827, Ipswich once aspired to be the capital of Queensland, leading to some of the oldest churches in the state, mansions, historic houses and cottages being built here. Here’s some of the churches included in Ipswich heritage trails.

History and heritage on show If you’re after more history take a trip out to the Cooneana Heritage Centre , which is home to the newly restored Cooneana Homestead . The 150 year old house showcases newspaper print that was found on the walls that dates back to 1874 as well as Victorian era wallpaper. At the heritage centre there is also a historic mining and machinery shed, blacksmith workshop, the Ipswich Spinners and Weavers, and the Ipswich Genealogical Society. Plan to spend a few hours wandering the history preserved by the Ipswich Historical Society including images of Ipswich Past and a collection of historical motorcycles. The first pipe organ in Queensland was installed here and is still in use. 5. Salvation Army Citadel South St The Ipswich Corp of the Salvation Army was founded in 1885 and the citadel was opened in 1922. 6. St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church and Sabbath Hall Gordon St St Stephen’s was built in 1866 and it’s tall steeple is a prominent landmark in Ipswich. The interior has interesting stained glass windows. Its decorative style is referred to as Carpenter Gothic. 7. Bush Chapel Queens Park The land for the bush chapel was set aside in 1842 and formally became a park in 1863. The chapel is popular for wedding ceremonies. 8. St Thomas’ Anglican Church 15 Lawrence St The 1980s brick exterior of the church conceals a remarkable interior, a typical English-style timber church. The church was constructed in 1889 but the pipe organ is believed to be much older as it came from the original Methodist Church located in Albert St, Brisbane.

The interior is impressive and the grounds include a primary school, presbytery, parish hall and convent. Hitching rings are still present on the wall opposite the church. This is the oldest Baptist Church in Queensland, it was constructed in 1876 as a simple Gothic-style building. The front wall was
