Spend some time in the heritage city of Ipswich and it won’t be long before you hear mention of Top of Town and Nicholas Street Precinct. So, where are these areas, specifically?

Top of Town refers to a stretch of Brisbane Street right in the heart of Ipswich that has an entire strip of spectacular heritage buildings. And much like those cities in foreign countries that are so good to explore, mixing modern business with timeless character, Ipswich’sTop of Town has a unique and quirky kind of allure. A mix of independently owned and family-run shops, businesses and cafes have opened in the area in recent years, offering a unique shopping experience. In perhaps the best known landmark of this part of town, the Old Flour Mill , you’ll find a special array of retailers including The Soul Cauldron and Embers & Twine . Back out on the street, fashion outlets like Oh JoJo! Boutique , Soul Sista and Obsession Shoes bring hard-to-find labels to the city – and attract regulars from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba. Cute to Boot specialises in baby and toddler shoes, clothing and nursery items thoughtfully sourced from around the world. Other outlets to explore include the retail and gallery space Arttime Supplies and the Aladdin’s Den that is Vintage Advantage . Rafter & Rose around the corner on Ellenborough Street, Fourthchild in a majestic old building, the nostalgia-inducing Retro Diner and German restaurant Heisenberg Haus are among the eateries you’ll find in this area. Wander a little further past historic St Paul’s Church and you’ll find yourself in the striking new Nicholas Street Precinct , including the site formerly known as the Ipswich Mall. This area has emerged as an exciting dining and retail pocket in the city – keep watching as more and more new businesses are set to open in this area and its surrounding laneways. ■
