Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve Adventure meets history at Castle Hill. Explore the Lewis Thomas Historical Trail and uncover Ipswich’s coal mining past as you pass open mine tunnels, hand-dug shafts and relics of the imposing three-storey castle that once stood here. For thrill-seekers, this reserve also boasts epic downhill mountain biking trails. Denmark Hill Conservation Reserve Forget you’re in the city as you wander leafy tracks surrounded by towering native trees. Spot owls, kookaburras, wrens and finches along circuits ranging from 200–800m. Finish at the picnic area with BBQs and a playground for the kids.
Flinders–Goolman Conservation Estate Covering more than 2,200 hectares, this rugged estate is home to volcanic peaks like Flinders Peak, Mt Blaine, Mt Catherine and Mt Goolman. New trails to Mt Blaine and Mt Goolman lookouts offer jaw-dropping views of mountain ranges beyond. Activities include hiking, birdwatching, mountain biking and horse riding (BYO bike or horse). For serious hikers, tackle Flinders Peak – the tallest peak in the Greater Brisbane region. Purga Nature Reserve Step into a unique ecosystem at Purga, home to Australia’s largest protected remnant of Swamp
Tea-tree. Wander the Wirepi Trail (500m) or Ngudur Trail (1.4km), both named to honour First Nations language and culture. Shorter walks include a 350m wheelchair-accessible boardwalk amid ghostly, ashen trees – perfect for a peaceful nature fix.
White Rock – Spring Mountain Conservation Estate
This stunning estate offers everything from easy 200m walks to a challenging 19km round trip. A track leads to Gunpit Ridge Lookout, named for its military history. Enjoy hiking, birdwatching, horse riding and mountain biking – but remember, climbing on White Rock is prohibited to protect its cultural heritage.
