Message from Ipswich Mayor, Teresa Harding

Autumn is always a celebratory time in Ipswich as we prepare for both the Easter Holidays and a welcome dose of cooler weather. We’ve started this year off with a bang with many wonderful and exciting events here in Ipswich. The Workshops Rail Museum will have plenty for the children in the school holidays, which include Easter this year, with displays of restored locomotives and carriages. You can even step back in time at Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway, with picnic train trips for the family. The city will play host to the inaugural Planes, Trains and Autos Festival on the May long weekend. Join us for an adrenaline charged celebration of all things aviation, rail and autos.

As the weather starts to turn from the heat of summer, residents can enjoy the IAG Exhibition Portraiture in still life at Ipswich Art Gallery until mid-April. Autumn is a wonderful time to experience the changing colours of our city at any of council’s many well-maintained parks. Another first for Ipswich will be the Anywhere Festival, partnering this year with council, to dazzle and amaze locals and tourists with dance and comedy performances in unusual locations. The widely recognised and respected Ipswich Art Awards will be bigger and better in 2021 with a host of well- known artists and their top-class work. There is just so much to see and do in Ipswich, whatever the season. So come along and have a wonderful and safe Easter break.

IPSWICH’S NEWEST STREET LIBRARY HAS UNUSUAL READING ROOM

Toilets have often been called ‘reading rooms’ and the Marburg community has a great sense of humour. A sprawling street library and somewhat unusual reading room have popped up out the front of the green shed in the centre of town. A tin outhouse has been built to serve as a reading room and is already proving popular with the locals. It should be noted however, that it is not a functioning toilet. When the Children’s Book Council of Australia (Qld branch) called for expressions of interest for one lucky member across the state to be the recipient of a street library donated by Street Library Australia, Ipswich Libraries was quick to jump to action. The submission, based on the street library being located in the township of Marburg, was successful, with the street library being delivered directly into the hands of the Marburg Residents Association.

Councillor Russell Milligan said that this initiative was a great way to bring books to rural areas as Ipswich’s population booms. “The Marburg Residents Association have shown real enthusiasm for having this street library in their community,” Cr Milligan said. “Not only did they embrace the idea but they built on it to put their own unique country stamp on it by adding additional libraries and reading room.” Councillor Kate Kunzelmann said it was a wonderful innovation to be able to use the service provided by the community for the community. “I congratulate the local residents and artists who have spent a lot of voluntary time to put this street library together,” Cr Kunzelmann said.

PRIME LAND ACQUIRED FOR EXTENDED CONSERVATION ESTATE

Ipswich City Council has purchased 65 hectares of prime conservation land at Woolshed, which will be added to the Mount Grandchester Conservation Estate. Council had been working with the owners for some time and the acquisition was confirmed in January. The Ipswich Enviroplan Program and Levy funds will be used to purchase the land. Mayor Teresa Harding said the land purchase will deliver on council’s commitment to preserve and protect our natural environment and cultural heritage, and create opportunities for environmental tourism. “We are delighted to secure this land for the community. It is important not only for Ipswich, but for all of South East Queensland,” she said. “This will increase the capacity for nature-based recreation activities and enhances visitor experience when the estate is activated and developed.

“It also secures and actively restores vegetation containing unique patches of rocky outcrops and habitat areas for significant species, including

the vulnerable koala and glossy-black cockatoo.

“It will protect Aboriginal cultural heritage landscape values as well as aesthetic values along the regional significant Little Liverpool Range corridor.” The council acquisition will double the width of the protected area for the north-south wildlife movement corridor at its narrowest “pinch” point to 1,000m from the current 400m. Wider protected and managed corridors support safer movement for wildlife through the landscape. It also increases the size of the Mount Grandchester Conservation Estate by 7 per cent to 1,042ha.

COUNCIL’S DRIVE FOR CHANGE WITH COURT WIN

Belinda Janson is council’s only female waste truck driver but that is not expected to be the case for long. Ipswich City Council has won an exemption from the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) under the Anti-Discrimination Act to advertise for females only to be recruited for a training program to obtain a Heavy Rigid licence needed to drive a waste truck. The submission stated that there are often socio-economic barriers faced by women seeking to meet the heavy rigid (HR) licence prerequisite as there are significant costs involved in obtaining the licence including specialised lessons, the cost of the licence itself and the time involved for the lessons. Women are recognised as being under represented across the transport industry and these measures aim to

reverse the inequality by assisting women to enter the industry.

Further planning will now be undertaken to form a driver training program that will involve free training provided to trainees to achieve a HR licence. Ms Janson said it was an interesting field to work in and offered job security. “Girls can do it just as good as guys so it will be great to get some more girls in,” she said. “It is harder for females to get into the industry as lot of people are under the assumption that females can’t drive trucks or big rigs or whatever the case may be, so it is a little bit harder for women but we are slowly seeing more out there which is good. “Just get in and give it a crack, its good fun.” Subscribe free to Ipswich First news alerts at Ipswichfirst.com.au/subscribe/
