Ipswich.qld.gov.au

A voice for fairer funding in the city we love. ‘We can’t wait’ is an Ipswich City Council initiative that aims to amplify the voices of Ipswich residents. It emphasises the urgent need for investment in our roads and public transport, ahead of the State election in October 2024. Without this critical support, our city faces increasing congestion, reduced business productivity, failing road systems and a declining quality of life.

We can’t wait. We need commitments now. Join the waitlist at wecantwait.com.au

Message from Ipswich Mayor, Teresa Harding

There is nowhere quite like Ipswich to enjoy springtime. Nestled as a breath of fresh air between the chilly months of winter and scorching heat of summer, there is no better time to take in all that the region has to offer. Our city comes alive each year when we celebrate our unique history as home to Jagera, Yuggera and Ugarapul peoples

Nominations close Sunday 3 November. The last time this immersive dinosaur display brought more than 28 life-like, animatronic dinosaurs to Nicholas Street Precinct, it attracted a record-breaking 50,000 attendances, delighting young and old. Of course, spring is all about getting out in the garden and discovering new ways to enjoy the benefits of reaping what you sow. Sustainable Ipswich will be back in October, providing a wide range of events and workshops designed to make living sustainably in Ipswich easier. As the days warm up, spring is also a reminder to start preparing what your entry will involve in Ipswich’s hotly contested City of Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition.

COUNCIL AMENDS FOOD ORGANICS PROGRAM AS MARKET CHANGES

Ipswich’s community and council’s campaigning regarding the ongoing odour issues in the region. While these changes were necessary to address legislative and community concerns around odour, it has not slowed council’s plans for a city-wide Garden Organics (GO) service in the 2025–2026 financial year. The waste industry will now review these changes and adapt to meet the significantly higher expectations of the state, council and the community. Council’s green-lidded bin service for garden organics will continue for existing customers.

Ipswich residents will be asked to stop placing food scraps in their green-lidded bins under a change to Ipswich City Council’s Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service. The change was made in preparation for proposed Queensland Government changes to the environmental standards for composting, making food waste significantly more expensive to process. Council will keep its garden organics collection service but cease the food organics component while the State’s proposed legislative changes for food organics are reviewed by the waste industry. The proposed legislative changes come as the Queensland Government suggests classifying organic food waste as a ‘highly odorous’ material echoing

IPSWICH SHIFTING TO RENEWABLE ENERGY

Council’s major buildings across the city will be powered by renewable sources under a new agreement.

Based on our community’s vision for a greener city, council adopted a Sustainability Strategy in 2021 which committed to a target reduction of 50 per cent of the organisation’s direct emissions. Negotiating a new Power Purchase Agreement will reduce council’s emissions by approximately 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over a several-year contract. Council will continue its work to ensure we meet our renewable energy targets and do our part in creating a sustainable Ipswich.

Council has reached a major milestone in its commitment to sustainability, commencing negotiations to switch to renewable energy that will reduce operational emissions by about 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Ipswich will then be just the third local government to switch to renewable energy in Queensland. Almost 30,000 street lights and council’s major buildings across the city like the council administration building, Ipswich Central Library and Ipswich Art Gallery would all be powered by renewable sources under a new agreement. Ipswich Art Gallery recently completed a comprehensive overhaul of their lighting infrastructure, significantly enhancing its energy efficiency and the presentation of exhibitions.

SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIP CONTINUES TO BLOSSOM

garden is to create a place of peace and tranquillity, a place to meet nature and calm the spirit. However impacts by native flying foxes have caused partial closures of the gardens for safety. The revised master plan for Nerima Gardens will consider responses to climate change, long-term sustainability, environmental values and challenges, including flying foxes. The updated master plan will also seek to establish an ongoing level of access for the local and broader community to enjoy the beauty of the gardens, which is renowned as a major draw card for the City of Ipswich.

Ipswich City Council recently welcomed a delegation from sister city Nerima City to progress an update to the master plan for the popular Nerima Gardens in Queens Park. The six-member delegation represented the Nerima Gardens Renovation Task Force (NGRTF), who is working with council officers, including landscape architects, open space planners and field services officers, to map out the future of the Nerima Gardens. Nerima Gardens first opened in 2001, featuring a careful balance between local and Japanese characteristics and natural elements including Nerima’s floral emblem, the Azalea, and Ipswich’s own Eucalyptus curtisii . The gardens are inspired by the sister city link between Ipswich and Nerima City, Japan, and the philosophy of the

The rejuvenation of Ipswich’s city heart is approaching an exciting phase with the Hotel Commonwealth and Nicholas Street Venue building both preparing to welcome their first patrons in spring. Council’s construction crews called ‘tools down’ for the last time on the restoration and expansion of the Hotel Commonwealth early in winter. With safety screens removed in June, passersby were provided a sneak peek of newly tiled frontage and entry while inside, a new amenities block and extended footprint towards the river across three levels was all being finalised to hand over to hotel manager, AusHotels. Now, the countdown is on for AusHotels to complete their fit out works and ultimately serve the first
