Make sure your summer is one to remember for all the right reasons by carrying out a few simple checks around your pool/spa. Actively checking your pool barrier and surrounds can save a life. Pool gates should open away from the pool and must self-close and self-latch The latch must be at least 1.5m from the ground to prevent unsupervised access by young children Pool fences must be a minimum of 1.2m high. Climbable objects close to the pool fence (such as trees, plants and garden beds, outdoor furniture, toys or other nearby structures) can reduce the effective height of your fence Look for signs of deterioration such as rust, loose hinges or broken panels and arrange for immediate repair Check that your pool is recorded on the QBCC Pools Register (my.qbcc.qld.gov.au). If the property has been recently sold or rented, a Pool Safety Certificate should be recorded.

Summer is that time of year we all long for and love-loathe in the same breath. Those beautiful hot days, stormy nights and humid moments in between. Summer is a time for holidays, Christmas and the start of a brand new year. The Weather Bureau is warning of the potential for the triple threat of heavy rain, bushfires and cyclones over coming months, so the Get Ready Queensland campaign could not have come at a better time in the lead-up to summer 2021–22. Ipswich City Council is working towards a safer future for everyone in the community by making planning for natural disasters as easy and as early as possible. Council’s Christmas in Ipswich program will be bigger, better and brighter in December. We have supported several citywide events this year with community carols for everyone. The Christmas Lights Competition will be another favourite with residents, while we have Santa on Tour and Letters to Santa for the children at all our participating libraries. That is also a timely reminder for pool safety messages: make sure children and pets are safe around the backyard pool, keep them clean and healthy, be smart parents and put the devices away and keep a close eye on your precious young ones. Summer is also the perfect time to visit our conservation estates, for bush- walking, trail-running or mountain- biking. Always be alert and be extra careful about fire safety as the environment will be dry. And there are the perfect council locations to beat the heat: a range of Ipswich Civic Centre shows, the Ipswich Art Gallery and the new Ipswich Children’s Library in the administration building in the Nicholas Street Precinct. It is a great time of year, but also one where we all have to take those normal seasonal precautions and be safe over the summer. Ipswich City Council is dedicated to a greener Ipswich and offers residents six free plants each financial year through the Free Plant Program. You can collect plants from the Queens Park Nursery or the Mobile Nursery when it stops in a suburb close to home. Sustainable Ipswich Month has brought together experts who have shared their insights for living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

“Check out our local op-shops. Seriously, we are spoiled for choice!” she said. “Vintage tablecloths, crazy patterned doonas, bed sheets and even linen tea towels can be made into the most extraordinary and beautiful things to wear or decorate your home.” Local Habitat Gardens member Ian Muil hosted an open garden that showcased ways to attract pollinators like bees and birds. “The key is to provide a wide variety of food sources and shelter. This can include plants that flower at different times of the year,” he said. “Native grasses are also good for small birds while wattles, bottlebrush and myrtle are great for native bees.” Find more information at Ipswich.qld.gov.au/sustainability

Gardening consultant Kate Wall shared how healthy soil leads to a happier garden.

“My motto is, if in doubt add compost! Healthy soils need lots of organic matter and microbes. My second top tip is to use rock minerals enhanced with extra microbes,” she said. Sustainability blogger Nicole Lutze provided simple tips on reducing waste at home. “Think ‘what would my great- grandparents have done?’ and you will usually find a cheap and plastic-free solution,” she said. “Learning to cook is a game-changer for reducing waste, saving money and improving your health.” Local artist Rebecca Lewis shared her inspiration for upcycling clothing and more.

Friends of Ipswich Libraries is 20 this year

It’s a momentous year for Friends of Ipswich Libraries (FOILS) with the group this year celebrating its 20th anniversary. FOILS started in October 2001 and since then this enthusiastic group of library supporters has come together each month with the objective of enhancing and promoting the library service and strengthening its links with the community. In consultation with council, FOILS organises community-based events and activities that help promote Ipswich Libraries and enrich the cultural life of the community.

An $811,000 upgrade to support State Emergency Service volunteers has been completed, with the works supporting increased volunteer capacity, and improved amenity during responses to

Since the completed works, there is a new sheltered outdoor area with ample seating for volunteers to rest and a welcome respite zone during emergency response events. The upgrade to the SES facility is one of many happening around the Ipswich City Council area to support our growing community.

Landcare volunteers, a sustainable school, and a charity funded exclusively through recycling initiatives have been recognised for their major contributions to a greener city at the 2021 Ipswich Enviro Awards. The winners were announced at the Flinders-Goolman Conservation Estate and received bespoke trophies by Ipswich Artist Donna Davis and a copy of the Natural Places of Ipswich coffee table book each. The Ipswich Enviro Awards were the perfect culmination to celebrations for 25 years of Ipswich Enviroplan. Through the ratepayer-supported Ipswich Enviroplan, council and the community have taken positive action on a number of environmental fronts. ENVIRONMENT CHAMPIONS RECOGNISED

Environmental Hero: Arnold and Joyce Rieck Arnold and Joyce Rieck have dedicated 20 years of continual hard work to the Mason’s Gully project alone. Many specimens of rare Rosewood Scrub species have been established through their activities. Together they have made a significant impact not only on the Rosewood area but also inspired many others in the community to improve the natural environment.

Goodna State School has adopted a holistic view of sustainability to reduce the school and community’s environmental footprint. Initiatives go above and beyond, spanning from solar panels to Containers for Change collections. Students are the driving force and manage all recycling programs, develop initiatives such as book and clothes sales and gardens, and conduct audits to implement various improvements.

Darcy Witherspoon is the founder of the Down to Earth charity. It addresses both sustainability and supporting the homeless and those in need. The charity is funded entirely through 10c refunds on recycled cans and bottles. It is built around recycling, using donations of clothing and blankets, and has also prevented tonnes of imperfect and end- of-shelf-life groceries going to landfill.
