Message from Ipswich Mayor, Teresa Harding

As the mercury soars, so does the potential for extreme weather. Preventing, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from bushfires and other natural disasters is everyone’s

During the school holidays, enjoy Nicholas Street Precinct activations, including the spectacular St Nicholas Precinct, spend time at one of our fantastic libraries, or take a splash at Tulmur Place, Bob Gamble Park or Orion Lagoon to cool off. And if you have a young person in your household with an interest in politics, nominate them for the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council. Ensuring young people have a voice in our city’s growth is critical, and I always enjoy hearing their visions for the future. Council continues to progress in creating a more sustainable, green and cleaner Ipswich. If you are out cleaning up the garden, remember, we’re a GO on Garden Organics but it is a no to food waste going into our green lidded bins. And, of course, the popular City of Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition is on again – take a drive through our suburbs to explore and enjoy our community’s spectacular Christmas lights.

A new clubhouse for community sporting groups will be built at Silver Jubilee Sports Facility in Spring Mountain after Ipswich City Council selected H&G Contractors for construction. Construction starting on the $3 million clubhouse is a key milestone for Ipswich’s rapidly growing eastern suburbs. Community sports groups welcomed the expansive Silver Jubilee Sports facility when it opened in 2023 with two rugby fields, an AFL field, six dedicated basketball and netball hard courts, picnic facilities and playground. This exciting new facility will include a clubroom, change rooms, referees’ rooms, kitchen and food preparation area, and more – everything our community sport clubs need to succeed. SILVER JUBILEE SPORTS FACILITY CLUBHOUSE UNDERWAY

This project is being jointly funded by council and the Australian Government through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, stimulating additional infrastructure construction in local communities nationally to help in managing the economic impacts of COVID-19. Following a tender process, council recently selected H&G Contractors from 10 businesses to deliver the project. Construction has started and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.

Be wildlifesafe

for summer This time of year you may find wildlife needing help – but it is important to stay safe!

FLYING FOXES Summer brings an influx of migrating flying foxes as they follow the seasonal flowering of native trees, such as eucalypts. Flying foxes are not able to sweat, so they are prone to heat stress and can die in heatwaves. WHAT TO LOOK FOR If flying foxes are low in trees or on the ground, they are likely unwell. WHAT TO DO Never touch a flying fox! Call Bat Conservation and Rescue QLD: 0488 228 134 . LORIKEETS Lorikeets are a familiar sight (and sound) of summer. Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome peaks during the summer months, with thousands of birds needing specialised care each year. The cause of the disease is unknown. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Lorikeets that are unable to fly with varying degrees of paralysis. WHAT TO DO Call RSPCA’s hotline: 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) .

For more information about how to be wildlife safe, visit Ipswich.qld.gov.au/wildlife

SHARING THE NATIONAL COLLECTION

17 NOV 2024 — 10 NOV 2025

Ipswich Art Gallery is hosting four significant works from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection. The Sharing the National Collection initiative, funded under Australia’s National Cultural Policy Revive , enables major works of art to be exhibited outside the nation’s capital.

WHAT’S ON Ipswichartgallery.qld.gov.au

Ipswich Eagles Australian Football Club players were excited to learn from Brisbane Lions AFLW greats at Limestone Park during the partnership announcement.

LIONS PARTNERSHIP TO BRING REAL REWARDS FOR IPSWICH

Over the next three years, Ipswich will welcome formal development pathways for future female athletes and sport administrators through the Lions Institute of Business and Sport, a collaboration with TAFE Queensland. The City of Ipswich will also be front and centre at the Gabba when it takes over the match day presenting rights at a Brisbane Lions AFL home game.

A three-year partnership between Ipswich City Council and the Brisbane Lions will create development pathways for future female athletes and aspiring sport administrators, in the heart of Ipswich. The partnership will bring a host of benefits, including promotion of the City of Ipswich at Brisbane Lions home games, access to Brisbane Lions AFLW players for community health programs, celebratory events, and more state and national sporting championships to be held at Brighton Homes Arena. This exciting partnership capitalises on the Brisbane Lions AFLW team calling Brighton Homes Arena at Springfield Central their home and further cements Ipswich as the headquarters for the Brisbane Lions.

HATCHING THE LUCKY ONES

Denzel Kennedy is a Brisbane-based Indigenous hip-hop and rap artist. Denzel’s cultural roots run deep, gathering inspiration from his Kalkadoon heritage and the traditional country that surrounds the Mount Isa region. Denzel blends traditional hip-hop elements with boom-bap and jazz influences, creating a sound that is both contemporary and culturally resonant. His upcoming EP represents a new chapter in his artistic evolution. Denzel is a busy man. Not only is his music career going from strength to strength, but he also finds time

to balance his creative life with being a player for the Men’s NBL1 Ipswich Force team, Indigenous Support Officer at Ipswich Grammar School, whilst studying to be a teacher. In November, Denzel will be a Hatchery 4305 resident at Studio 188 , where he will be hatching songs for his upcoming EP/album ‘The Lucky Ones’. The residency will provide Denzel access to a recording studio in a professional space and a creative environment. It is also an opportunity to produce higher quality works which in turn deliver better listening/performance experiences for audiences. Come and celebrate Denzel’s EP at The Lucky Ones Listening Party.

COUNCIL FLICKS SWITCH ON 100 PER CENT GREEN ENERGY

A key part of council’s contract specifications during the open market procurement process was that the renewable energy products driving this switch had to be based in Queensland. CleanCo, based in Swanbank, will provide energy sourced from windfarms in western and northern Queensland. Reducing council’s carbon emissions will provide real benefits for Ipswich and continues council’s focus on delivering its Sustainability Strategy 2021–2026.

Major council buildings and nearly 30,000 streetlights will be powered with 100 per cent renewable energy under a new contract between Ipswich City Council and publicly-owned CleanCo Queensland. The contract delivers one of council’s major sustainability goals of 50 per cent emissions reduction. As well as almost 30,000 streetlights, the contract allows for powering major facilities such as council’s administration building, Ipswich Central Library and Ipswich Art Gallery.
