VISITORS SPENDING MORE THAN EVER IN IPSWICH

We’ve long known our city is a leading tourism destination rivalling the best that South East Queensland has to offer – and now the latest visitation numbers are in to prove it. Data released from Tourism Research Australia shows total visitor expenditure in Ipswich reached a record high of $346 million in the year to March 2023. Tourism is a crucial driver of the Ipswich economy and a key focus for Ipswich City Council. Total domestic expenditure of $346 million in our city is a huge jump from previous years, smashing the average annual spend of around $200 million over the past five years.

Ipswich’s overnight visitation has increased by 25 per cent since before the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by major events, festivals, corporate tourism and sporting carnivals. Whether it’s to enjoy Australia’s best country music at CMC Rocks QLD, celebrate our heritage at Galvanized festival, or take part in other local events, domestic visitors are spending more time in Ipswich than ever, leading to record expenditure. Other tourism hot spots in South East Queensland are on notice: the numbers are in and it’s well and truly Ipswich’s time to shine.

IPSWICH WELCOMES 250,000 th RESIDENT

Philisha and Dave Riddell officially tipped the city’s population over 250,000.

Ipswich marked a major population milestone recently, welcoming the city’s 250,000 th resident. Dave and Philisha Riddell moved into a newly built home at Walloon, pushing the city’s population up to 250,000. The Riddell’s were identified as the landmark residents by Ipswich City Council’s innovative Ipswich Population Modeller which tracks the number of wheelie bins issued to new residents. Ipswich has come a long way since it was founded in 1860 and was proclaimed a city in 1904, at the time home to just 8,637 people. This latest milestone reaffirms our status as Queensland’s fastest growing city, with six new homes being added on average per day and more than 6,200

new residents choosing to call Ipswich home in the 12 months to 30 June 2023. It underscores why the city needs ongoing support and investment from the State and Federal governments to provide funding for important infrastructure like roads, sewerage and public transport. Dave and Philisha Riddell said they chose Ipswich for the lifestyle it had to offer. “We have two grown children now, and this home is for the next phase of our life. We’re really looking forward to being a part of the Ipswich community,” Mr Riddell said.

Georgie Carroll is a comedian, author, registered nurse and family woman born in the UK, now settled in Australia. This combination of nationalities, home life and hospital has provided a 24/7 training ground that has nurtured Georgie’s naturally funny bones. Her bluntness and charm coupled with razor-sharp wit, give her a broad-spectrum appeal that allows her to shine in any room. Prior to recording her Network 10 comedy special ‘The Gloves are Off’ Georgie had written seven solo stand up shows, each of which sold out nationally. Georgie is now a familiar face on Australian TV, appearing on Have You Been Paying Attention?, Hughesy We Have A Problem, the Oxfam Melbourne International Comedy Gala and The Project. She also made her British TV debut – reaching the finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2023. Georgie went viral with a huge stand-up clip ‘the three stages of nursing’, reaching over 7 million views and has developed a huge overseas following. In 2023 Georgie returned from her debut two month sold out UK tour. Georgie continues to tour Australia to sold out crowds – healing us all one laugh at a time. At a time when nurses have never needed to laugh harder, Nurse Georgie is the one to have them in stitches, the best kind. “Nurse Georgie Carroll is a riot that had the audience rolling in the aisles.” The Clothesline

The Australian Icon

Beyond the music, John Williamson is a man of unwavering integrity. He has never compromised his beliefs, standing tall with every note he sings. His music is not just entertainment; it’s a reflection of his deep love and pride for his country. John’s live performances are legendary moments in Australian history, from singing ‘All Australian Boys Need a Shed’ at the opening of Parliament House to performing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ at the Sydney Olympics. He has graced memorial services for icons like Sir Donald Bradman and Steve Irwin, leaving an indelible mark on these significant occasions. As John reflects on his illustrious career, he looks to the future with a discerning eye, continuing to write new songs and share his music with fans while dreaming of spending more time at his Springbrook property, where creativity thrives. In a world of constant change, John Williamson’s music remains a steadfast reminder of the beauty, resilience and spirit of Australia. His songs are not just melodies; they are a part of the nation’s soul, weaving together the stories of its people. As long as there’s Australia, there will be John Williamson, singing true blue songs that capture the heart of the land he loves.

John Williamson, an embodiment of the Australian spirit, is a name that conjures images of the vast outback and the enduring essence of the country. Capturing the core of this iconic artist is as challenging as encapsulating the beauty of Australia in a single image. Yet, a glimpse into his remarkable five-decade career reveals why John Williamson is a national treasure. In the fiercely competitive music industry, few have achieved the longevity and success that John has. With 53 years in the business, he has thrived, his music resonating with Australians from all walks of life, becoming the soundtrack to the nation’s stories, struggles and triumphs. What sets John apart is his unwavering commitment to Australia. While many chase international fame, he has remained loyal to his homeland, foregoing the allure of Hollywood and the global stage. Instead, he serenades everyday Australians, celebrating the spirit of the land down under. John’s accolades speak volumes about his talent and contribution. A member of the ARIA Hall of Fame, winner of multiple ARIA and APRA

Awards, and recipient of numerous Golden Guitar Awards, he has sold over 4 million albums in Australia, earning countless gold and platinum records. In 1992, he was honoured as a

COUNCIL EXCEEDS CUSTOMER SERVICE BENCHMARK

Council is continuing to work hard to improve its customer service.

Efforts to provide improved customer service for Ipswich residents are paying off with Ipswich City Council exceeding the local government sector benchmark for quality assurance, according to an independent assessment. Independent industry experts CSBA The Customer Experience Experts gave council an overall quality assurance score of 61.6 per cent, which is higher than the 51.8 per cent local government sector benchmark. CSBA made 78 calls to council between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023, assessing against a quality assurance framework based on three pillars of best practice – success, ease and sentiment. The improvement was a direct result of council’s three-year Customer Experience Strategy.

Council receives a high volume of interactions with residents and other customers, recording almost 16,000 customer service calls in June, more than 1,300 face-to-face interactions, about 7,300 customer service emails and 5,300 customer service interactions online. In August, council launched its Customer Charter outlining an ongoing commitment to providing professional and seamless services to the community. Council has also upgraded its Snap Send Solve channel to make it easier for residents to have community issues addressed.
