Message from Ipswich Mayor, Teresa Harding
With the heat fading from the days and cool night changes hinting at change in season, Autumn in Ipswich brings relief from summer and with it, nature’s colour show. Warm hues soften with the sun, bringing spectacular displays to our parks and gardens. It’s a good opportunity to enjoy a change in pace, a change of scenery, and the opportunity to celebrate new things to see, things to hear, do, as well as friends old and new. The changing of seasons is the inspiration for many of our previous entrants in the Ipswich Art Awards, which returns in 2022, for a 10-day exhibition that showcases the best of our local and regional talent. And back due to popular demand in 2022 is the Planes, Trains and Autos Festival following a successful inaugural event last year. One of my personal highlights from 2021, don’t miss what promises to be bigger and better show this year. We also have a packed and star- studded line up coming to the Civic Centre this Autumn, including John Paul Young as well as tribute Front Cover Image: Ipswich Childrens Library If you have any feedback regarding the Autumn Guide, please email council@ipswich.qld.gov.au or visit Ipswich.qld.gov.au Disclaimer: Published by Ipswich City Council © 2022 At time of printing all information is current and correct. performances dedicated to Queen, Roy Orbison, Janis Joplin and Abba. Autumn is also a time to commemorate the soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country, with ANZAC Day services to be held at cenotaphs and in local communities across the city. Go to our website to find a list of the services and marches taking place around our great city and register to take part. The Ipswich Art Gallery will also host the Australian War Memorial Touring Exhibition, Ink in the Lines, a look at the stories behind the tattoos of Australia’s modern veterans and how they use ink to remember people, events and experiences. Critically acclaimed, this is an exhibition not to be missed. There’s plenty happening in and around our city this Autumn, with vibrant dining and nightlife, outdoor adventures under crisp skies, and
family-friendly events for all. Whatever you choose to do in Ipswich this autumn, stay safe, have fun and continue to enjoy this magical city of ours.

AN AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL TOURING EXHIBITION
PLAQUES UNVEILED FOR FORGOTTEN SOLDIERS
Mr Rennie spent almost 20 years piecing together the mystery of who these men were and how these most iconic war veterans were forgotten. The Ipswich RSL Sub Branch identified soldiers who were not recorded as well other veterans throughout the cemetery, through detailed research and cross checking of cemetery and military records with their search continuing. Council lodged the development and building applications on behalf of the Ipswich RSL Sub Branch and have provided ongoing support with project planning and maintenance. Many local businesses also came on board donating materials and labour.
New memorial plaques have been unveiled at a moving ceremony at the Ipswich General Cemetery. There are now 165 shiny plaques on the memorial wall and while they won’t be shiny for long, they will remain on the wall for centuries to come as an enduring reminder to the generations after them, of their sacrifice. The Adopt a Soldier campaign began to cover the cost of the plaques after local veteran Matt Rennie OAM noticed there were many soldiers buried in the cemetery that either did not have a headstone or were not recorded in official records in the first place. The community was invited to adopt a soldier by paying for their plaque to go on the memorial walls.

If you haven’t yet met some of the Ipswich Nature Centre’s newest arrivals, now is the perfect time to do so. Toward the end of last year, the centre welcomed twin bilbies. The two little girls – Violet and Bilbina – were born in the centre’s world-class bilby breeding enclosure, which is a part of the National Recovery Plan for the species. Roni, the father, was born at the centre during 2020 with Juniper, the mother, new to the centre. The Ipswich Nature Centre has bred bilbies successfully in the past, with female triplets born in 2017. TWIN BABY BILBIES BORN AT IPSWICH NATURE CENTRE
Bilbies born in Ipswich have been released at the Save the Bilby Currawinya and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy Mt Gibson sites, and are said to be thriving in these specially protected areas. Bilbies are one of the fastest breeding mammals on earth with a 12-to-14-day pregnancy, but their survival in the wild is fragile, mainly due to introduced predators.

A first of its kind collaboration between Ipswich City Council and Ipswich State High School has seen local students gain real world design and construction experience while improving the Ipswich CBD. Woodwork and horticulture students in years 11 and 12 created and planted out up three to four planter boxes for Ipswich Central, with the opportunity to expand the initiative to larger projects in the future. The initiative allowed the city’s youth to play an active role in shaping the city while gaining hands-on work experience. INNOVATIVE PROGRAM UPSKILLING LOCAL STUDENTS
Brayden Baker works on the planter boxes
The project started with a meeting at the school which sparked a conversation about how council could form a partnership that provides outcomes for both the students and the community. The school-based trade training centre at the Ipswich State High School is one of the largest in the state and a real asset to Ipswich. The partnership has enabled horticulture and construction students to gain practical experience utilising their skills in projects that also benefit the residents of Ipswich. Ipswich State High School executive principal Simon Riley said this partnership was another initiative delivering pathways for students to develop real world skills while they are at school.
“Ipswich State High School is renowned for providing innovative programs to help our students achieve goals – from our High Performance Rugby League Program to our STEM program and now with council’s help, we have created another opportunity to deliver real-world solutions while improving the city through education,” he said. “This partnership provides council with access to the Ipswich State High School Trade Training Centre and the construction, horticulture, civil construction and engineering students, to work on community projects with council staff and the planter boxes are just the beginning.
The planter boxes in Bell Street, Ipswich
“Ipswich State High School is very proud of the reputation and work that is being produced by our Trade Training Students and we look forward to a long and productive partnership with council to deliver infrastructure to the community while providing our students with the opportunity to develop deep connections and sense of ownership of their city.” Three planter boxes have been placed in Bell Street and more are expected to be installed in Tulmur Place this year.

NATIVE FISH STOCKS BOOSTED IN BREMER RIVER
About 2,000 Mary River cod have been released into the Bremer River catchment
Other initiatives include removing weeds from riverbanks, restoring native vegetation and managing urban run-off. The Mary River cod is a large endemic species growing over a metre in length. As one of Australia’s most endangered fish, they are only found in a few waterways in south east Queensland. They are a protected species, with stocking efforts over the last 10 years focussed on increasing their distribution to new waterways to establish new conservation populations. The Bremer was historically filled with Brisbane River cod, which were driven to extinction by the early settlers of the greater Brisbane region in the early 1900s.
About 2,000 Mary River cod have been released into the Bremer River catchment to increase native fish populations and improve the river’s diversity. The release is part of Ipswich City Council’s plan to improve Ipswich’s waterways. Not only will the release contribute to the recovery of the Mary River cod, but also add greater diversity to the fish communities of the Bremer River. It is one of the many ways council
and the community is working towards improving the health of local river systems.
The fish are readied for release
This formal stocking represents the first time that large numbers of freshwater cod will have occupied the Bremer since they were lost 100 years ago. Hatchery staff, local fish stocking group Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries staff and council staff assisted in the release across six strategic locations with good habitat in the form of log-jams and deep pools, good riparian condition and suitable food availability. Rainfall throughout the catchment also provided ideal conditions for releasing these fish as it adds cool fresh water to the system, providing good connectivity for dispersal with an abundance of food. The hope is in years ahead to have an established, self-sufficient population of cod in the Bremer catchment with annual stockings to continue.
