Message from Mayor Teresa Harding

Summer is a time for coming together with friends and family. For holidays, Christmas and the start of a brand new year. As we have moved into our third La Nina, our community prepares for more rain and an elevated risk of flood. We are asking residents to be as prepared as possible and have a plan in place. Download the BOM Weather App on your phone and subscribe to the Ipswich Disaster Dashboard to access the most up-to-date emergency information. Recovery efforts continue with ongoing repairs of roads, infrastructure, sporting fields and the voluntary buybacks underway. Heading into the holiday period there are plenty of activities for the children in Tulmur Place, Ipswich Libraries, our conservation estates and more. This is also a timely reminder that keeping safe in the pool or when enjoying local waterways should be a priority for everyone. Council runs learn to swim programs across the city – visit council’s website for details. The Ipswich Civic Centre has some great shows across summer including a best of the Bee Gees show which Front cover: For a dazzling night out, check out Ipswich’s Top of Town for great food and drinks. If you have any feedback regarding the Summer Guide, please email council@ipswich.qld.gov.au or visit Ipswich.qld.gov.au Disclaimer: Published by Ipswich City Council © 2022 At time of printing all information is current and correct. Check out the Ipswich Art Gallery, Ipswich Children’s Library and Studio 188 for more entertainment. Council’s Christmas in Ipswich program will be bigger, better and brighter in December. We have supported several citywide events this year with community carols for everyone. The Christmas Lights Competition will be another favourite with residents while we have Santa on Tour and Letter to Santa for the children at participating libraries. Have you requested your new FOGO bin yet? Council is offering all residents a convenient food organics and garden organics (FOGO) collection service, turning waste such as garden clippings fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy leftovers into compost. Having a practical plan in place ahead of when disaster strikes is important for everyone in the community and that is why council wants to ensure people with disability, and their carers, are receiving the right support. People with disability are more vulnerable to injury and social isolation during a disaster, but this risk can be reduced with the right preparation. Council has been working with the community to promote the Disability DISABILITY TO BE DISASTER READY IN IPSWICH Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction framework which aims to ensure the needs and voices of people with disability are included in disaster preparedness. There are several ways people with disability and their carers can prepare for natural disaster and emergencies. On council’s website, people can access the Person Centred Emergency Preparedness Workbook which outlines EMPOWERING PEOPLE WITH

how to build an emergency plan based around individual support needs. There are also AUSLAN and captions on council’s Emergency Management YouTube channel, which has short videos on how to be ready ahead of the disaster season. Residents can also download the BOM Weather App on their phone and subscribe to the Ipswich Disaster Dashboard to access up to date emergency information. People with a disability are also encouraged to contact the Queenslanders with Disability Network Ipswich Peer Support Group to stay connected with support in the local area. For more details about emergency preparedness go to the Emergency Management page on council’s website.

Make sure your summer is one to remember for all the right reasons by carrying out a few simple checks around your pool/spa. Actively checking your pool barrier and surrounds can save a life. Pool gates should only open outwards away from the pool and must be self-closing and self-latching The latch must be at least 1.5m from the ground to the underside of the latch-release handle, to prevent unsupervised access by young children Pool fences must be a minimum of 1.2m high. Climbable objects close to the pool fence (such as trees, plants and garden beds, outdoor furniture, toys or other nearby structures) can reduce the effective height of your fence Look for signs of deterioration such as rust, loose hinges or broken panels and arrange for immediate repair Check that your pool is recorded on the QBCC Pools Register (Qbcc.qld.gov.au). If the property has been recently sold or rented, a Pool Safety Certificate should be recorded.

The above safety checks are a guide only and do not constitute acknowledgment or approval of compliance or safety.

For more info about pool safety and legislative requirements, visit Ipswich.qld.gov.au/seal

Ipswich residents can brush up on water safety through a series of free programs this summer as part of council’s efforts to support children and adults to be safe in and around the water. Swimming is an important life skill for all ages and learning how to swim saves lives. The free water safety events include children’s SEAL Water Safety and Swimming Lessons and Royal Life Saving Society Queensland adult water safety and learn to swim lessons. SEAL comprises four key water safety actions – supervise around the pool; enclose the pool with a fence; actively check the pool gate and fence; and learn CPR and how to swim. As well as learning to swim, a vital part of water safety is ensuring the pools we love to splash into on a warm day are safe. FREE WATER SAFETY CLASSES FOR IPSWICH FAMILIES AND ADULTS

With the hot summer months upon us, and with Queensland having one of the highest levels of pool ownership in the country, there is no better time to brush up on water safety. Pools come with serious risk, and drowning is one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for children under the age of five-years-old. A thorough safety check of your pool fence and gate takes very little time but could have a life changing impact if not done regularly. For more information about swimming pools, spas and safety barrier regulations visit council’s website.

IPSWICH’S LARGEST ROAD PROJECT INCORPORATING RECYCLED BITUMEN

Work already completed for Stage 1 on the Springfield Greenbank Arterial (from Eden Station Drive to Springfield Parkway) and Springfield Parkway (from Hymba Yumba Community Hub to the Centenary Highway, Springfield) include bulk earthworks, drainage works, retaining walls, water main works, underground conduit installation, relocation of services and the construction of a single span 20 metre bridge over Opossum Creek. Road users may notice changes in the landscape and experience possible traffic delays or an increase in noise for sections of the upgrade. The Springfield Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial Road Upgrade is proudly funded by the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) and Ipswich City Council.

Ipswich’s largest road upgrade is incorporating sustainable techniques in road paving as council continues to

move to a circular economy. The Springfield Parkway and

Springfield Greenbank Arterial work is incorporating recycled materials in the production of the foam bitumen being used in construction. The foam bitumen uses the existing material on-site which reduces the need for transporting new materials, reducing the number of trucks on the road and producing a more efficient use of resources. Foam bitumen is also more environmentally friendly to produce as it does not need the high temperatures that traditional bitumen does, reducing the carbon footprint. Springfield Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial are being expanded from two lanes to four lanes to assist in supporting efficient transport for Springfield and the city’s eastern corridor’s growing population.

It is now even easier for the community to view development applications and property data after council flicked the switch on a new online tool. ‘Development.i’ provides improved and easier access to historic and current planning and property information. Development.i replaces council’s previous PD Online application tracking system, allowing the community to track development applications in a more user-friendly way. It puts a wealth of information at residents’ fingertips, making it easy to search for property information, be notified about development applications and lodge submissions or comments on applications. Users can look up what development applications are active in your street and the search results can be filtered and shown on a map for easy reference. Users can also set up alerts to be notified when development applications are lodged. NEW ONLINE TOOL IMPROVES ACCESS TO IPSWICH PLANNING INFORMATION

In the 2021-2022 financial year, about 1,300 development applications were lodged to council, an increase of 7 per cent year on year. Council is embarking on a program of improvements including a new planning scheme and a new local government infrastructure plan. The upcoming new planning scheme is being prepared in an electronic format to allow planning information to be communicated more readily to the community. It is anticipated these new systems will be connected so that council can provide better information about the planning scheme, how it impacts property and how this relates to development across Ipswich. Development.i can be accessed at Developmenti.ipswich.qld.gov.au
