Ipswich’s newest landmark is a symbol of the city’s 60,000 years of First Nations culture, custodianship and survival, providing a place for healing and reflection. The Queens Park Ceremonial, Healing and Remembrance Place recognises the cultural significance of the lands and waters of Ipswich, known in the Yagara language as Tulmur, and the experiences of First Nations people throughout history. Sacrifices of First Nations men and women throughout history, whether it be in intra-clan disputes, the Frontier Wars or conflicts involving Australia overseas, are represented in sculptural elements such as a timeline depicted on a series of gundahn – the Yagara name for a conflict shield. IPSWICH’S NEWEST LANDMARK A PLACE OF CULTURE AND REFLECTION
The Queens Park Ceremonial, Healing and Remembrance Place official opening
Imagery of bird flocks signify camaraderie, while picnic lawns and an amphitheatre provide space for performances or quiet reflection. An initiative of council’s City of Ipswich Indigenous Accord 2020-2025, the Queens Park Ceremonial, Healing and Remembrance Place is a dedicated space for reflection, education and healing for the whole community. It is open to the public to use and enjoy, including for quiet reflection, and is expected to host ceremonies, performances and events by Traditional Owners and Indigenous organisations during occasions such as ANZAC Day and NAIDOC Week.

Ipswich Cemetery Ghost Tour
Step into a rich and layered past of grand architecture, old-world rail, character-filled precincts and surprising local tales, with heritage experiences that feel fresh, immersive and fun. How to explore history and heritage in Ipswich
One of the most atmospheric ways to begin is with a ghost tour led by historian Jack Sim’s team. Whether wandering through the CBD or exploring the cemeteries at Ipswich or Goodna, these tours reveal eerie tales that bring the city’s history to life after dark. For a deeper cultural experience, head to Hardings Paddock, where First Nations heritage is thoughtfully shared. Walk the Aboriginal Totem trail, visit the yarning circle and explore the bush tucker trail, all designed to connect visitors with traditional knowledge and Country. In Queens Park, the Ceremonial Healing and Remembrance Place offers a meaningful space to reflect on the service and sacrifice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Ipswich’s streets are lined with stunning historic buildings that tell their own stories.
Hardings Paddock
St Mary’s Catholic Church
Bakehouse Steakhouse
Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway
Landmarks like the Old Courthouse, St Mary’s Catholic Church and St Paul’s Anglican Church highlight the city’s architectural charm. At the Cooneana Heritage Centre, you can step inside a restored homestead or sit in an old-fashioned classroom. Dining is also part of the heritage experience, with restaurants set inside beautifully restored buildings, from former banks to century-old pubs. For something unique, take a ride on a heritage train along old mining routes, or explore military history at local museums. In Ipswich, history isn’t just preserved – it’s something you can truly experience.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL Returning for its sixth year in 2026, Galvanized – A Festival of Heritage is 10 days of curated experiences allowing visitors to immerse themselves in history, culture and celebration. From its diverse architecture and industrial landmarks to traditions from a bygone era, this citywide festival transforms Ipswich’s historic sites and hidden gems into living time capsules.
Galvanized respectfully acknowledges the Traditional owners, the Jagera, Yuggera and Ugarapul People of the Yugara/Yagara Language Group, as custodians of the land and waters we share. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, as the keepers of the traditions, customs, cultures and stories of proud peoples.
