Lunch

But first ...Coffee 1. Cafe Kalina , 66 Kingfisher Street, Springfield. A bright and breezy dog-friendly spot overlooking green space, next door to a playground for the kids – all in one of Springfield’s newest communities. 2. Dancing Bean , 164 Brisbane Street, Ipswich. The city’s own coffee roastery supplies cafes and restaurants across Queensland and has an on-site cafe at the end of a laneway in the Top of Town precinct. 3. Fourthchild , 215 Brisbane Street, Ipswich. Loved for its hearty home-cooked fare and eye-popping cakes cabinet, this cafe/ restaurant/bar has various indoor and outdoor areas in one of the city’s grand old pubs. 4. Oikos , 61 Limestone Street, Ipswich. A friendly cafe with a focus on healthy and delicious fare. Be sure to check out their little sibling too – a cute coffee van in Tulmur Place in the new Nicholas St precinct. 5. Rafter and Rose , 17 Ellenborough Street, Ipswich. A great love of both good food and the natural world are on display for all to see at this popular spot. Fantastic options for gluten and dairy-free diets on the menu and in the daily fresh-baked options. Pull up a chair at a vintage table indoors or opt for the equally leafy laneway outside. 6. St. Shoebill , 126 Brisbane Street, Ipswich. Serving one of Australia’s most highly awarded coffee brands, Ona, St. Shoebill combines the best of modern life and old- world traditions. There’s a fresh contemporary fit-out going on in the century-old landmark and a tantalising brunch and lunch menu on offer. This place also gets top gong for most original name and logo!

7. Casa Mia , 250 South Station Road, Raceview. Tucked in beside the popular Country Motel Ipswich, this welcoming spot is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily for both motel guests and the public, with an Italian menu and a cute tiki bar – perfect for a cocktail after a morning lounging by the pool! 8. Dovetails , 88 Limestone Street, Ipswich. Relaxed modern Australian dining with an award-winning wine list and beers brewed right next door at 4 Hearts Brewing. This elegant restaurant occupies the old Technical College site with tables inside and out on a deck that wraps around an old poinciana tree – a lovely lunch spot all year round. 9. Ballistic Beer Co , 37 Sinnathamby Boulevard, Springfield. Famous for great beer and a superb menu along with live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and from noon on Sundays. We love the lunch options here at this brewpub too. 10. Indian Mehfil , 116 Brisbane Street, Ipswich. Next to the Ipswich Art Gallery and situated in an old 1800s bank building, this is one of the city’s best-known restaurants and an ideal spot for a breezy cocktail and lunchtime curry. 11. Homage , 617 Grandchester Mount Mort Road, Grandchester. By footpath, tour coach or car, there’s plenty for history lovers to explore in the city of Ipswich.

One of the city’s best known tourist attractions, The Workshops Rail Museum , is located in the vast grounds of the original North Ipswich workshops established in the 1870s. Head there for a look at rail and architectural history. The Ipswich Musical Theatre Company stages shows in the Old Ipswich Courthouse at 75 East Street, and the Ipswich Little Theatre will see you heading to the unusual Incinerator Theatre built in 1936 on Burley Griffin Drive. It was designed by Walter Burley Griffin who was also the mastermind behind planning Canberra.

You can shop for antiques in the spectacular 1895 Congregational Church Memorial Hall at 86 East Street which is home to the Ipswich Antique Centre or sip an ale in the Pumpyard Bar and Brewery or Dovetails Restaurant which occupy the former Ipswich Technical College buildings, built in 1890, at 88 Limestone Street. Not far from here, Ungermann Brothers have opened a fabulous new milk bar in the old Queensland Times building, a grand relic of a bygone era, at the corner of Brisbane and Ellenborough Streets. Take a wander further along Brisbane Street for cafes and shops in grand old landmarks, collectively known as the Top of Town.

Call into the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre as a starting point and grab some trail maps or ask about specific heritage landmarks you can visit. Besides entire streets lined with stately colonial Queenslanders across the city, there are plenty of public landmarks to take in and many are in use like Kholo Gardens, creating a character- filled backdrop for the events, organisations and businesses contained therein.

HERITAGE

tales, ghost hunters and history... Spooky Many of the historical sites surrounding the Ipswich CBD, home to new dining and cultural hubs, harbour some of the region’s spookiest ghost stories. Fortunately for those that love a spooky tale there’s tours you can do to explore that side of Ipswich’s history. Learn about some of the historic graves at the Ipswich Cemetery with Jack Sim’s Ipswich Cemetery Ghost Tours . Mr Sim has been researching the grim and macabre tales of the heritage city for years. One of the stories is about James Ryan, who was buried at the Ipswich Cemetery, and who claimed he was one of the members of the infamous Kelly gang. He had severe burns on his legs and back and initials branded into his flesh, and he claimed he had escaped a fire at the siege of Glenrowan with another member of the Kelly gang. His untimely death came when he was decapitated by a coal train coming into Ipswich. It was said that he would often walk along the railway lines. Mr Sim’s business, Historic Australia also run tours that explore the Ipswich CBD at night including the Old Flour Mill which has a resident ghost called Hubert that can be heard wandering the halls at night.

Woodlands of Marburg is over 100 years old and has a few ghost stories to tell. Haunted Mansion Tours run on weekends.

And they’ve launched a Goodna Cemetery tour , which is only for brave souls as it’s said to be one of the most haunted sites in the Ipswich region. Another way to explore the ghosts of Ipswich past is to join The Haunted Mansion tour at Woodlands of Marburg . The tour takes you around the grounds to learn the history of the mansion built in 1890, including its first owners the pioneering Smith family and how the estate later became a seminary. Listen for messages from the mansion’s former owners Tommy and Mary Smith who had 11 children when they lived there, as well as some of the priests that passed away while the property was a seminary. Visit chilling rooms that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! The mansion is now a multi-use venue with accommodation, a restaurant and a cafe open on weekends, and is often used for weddings and functions. Finally, Sip ‘n’ Dip has partnered with paranormal investigators to bring an interactive Paint ‘n’ Paranormal tour to Ipswich. Your ticket includes dinner or nibbles, a drink and a learn

to paint class which includes all your materials. Your paint class could be learning to paint the historic venue that you’ll be investigating, a haunted forest or The Scream, Edvard Munch’s famous painting. After your guided art class, go on a paranormal investigation of the venue, complete with spirit boxes and Ouija boards. Some of the venues include the Marburg Pub , Wolston Farm House , Goodna Cemetery and Jets Leagues Club .

A weekend in the 'Swich for fun-seeking families

You will be pleased to know there’s a South East Queensland destination you can reach from Brisbane, Toowoomba, the Gold and Sunshine coasts without a monotonous long haul drive.

Say g’day to Ipswich, the historic city with a big country heart. Packed with fun things for adventurous families to do. Pack the car Friday night because we’re leaving early to arrive for breakfast in a cafe in the heart of Queensland’s oldest designated public parkland, Queens Park . Book ahead for your visit to EWE Nique Hobby Farm , The Llama Farm , Naughty Little Kids or Summer Land Camels . If you’d rather stay in the city, take a walk in the Nicholas St and Top of Town precincts along Brisbane Street with its eclectic array of shops, including a fourth-generation hobby shop, CJ Vogler and Sons, that has been selling model cars and trains since 1877. Then check into your spacious family room at Quest Ipswich . The kids will love the pool here complete with inflatable toys and gaming options for your room too. ADVENTURE

There are many ways you can enjoy the great outdoors in Ipswich. With the region home to over 6,500 hectares of reserves and conservation estates there’s plenty of hiking, biking and bird watching options available. in the Heritage City A nature escape

Here are the best ways to immerse yourself in nature...

Take a drive from your camping site to a spot along the Brisbane and Bremer rivers to launch your canoe or kayak for the day. Don’t forget the fishing rod either as these places are sure to land a bite or two. Joseph Brady Park sits on the junction of the Bremer and Brisbane Rivers; it is deep enough for boats, and fishing. The park has a playground for the kids too and ample space for a picnic rug. Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve is a tranquil piece of the Brisbane River with boat ramp access and water that isn’t too deep. There’s also plenty of places for a picnic and barbeque facilities. Burton’s Bridge , also on the Brisbane River is serene and a great place to cast a lure, float in the kayak or splash in the shallows. There’s also an adventurous 21km paddle trail all the way down to Kholo if you’re up for it. Cribb Park and Shapcott Park are both located in the Ipswich CBD and provide access to the Bremer River allowing you to do some sightseeing on your canoe trail. CANOE TRAILS

Hiking at Flinders Peak is the ultimate challenge. The track up the 679m peak is recommended for advanced hikers. In case you’re wondering, to put it into perspective Flinders Peak is higher than the Glasshouse Mountains. If you’re planning on tackling this challenge get here early just after the sun rises to make the most of the cooler hours, as you’ll need at least six hours to get up and back down again. But it will all be worth it as you see spectacular views of craggy peaks, the Bremer River catchment and the Scenic Rim. Look out for brush-tailed rock wallabies, peregrine falcons and wedge-tailed eagles. You can stay in the Flinders-Goolman Conservation Estate at a rustic nature-based bush camp called Hardings Paddock . There’s no running water on site, but there are cubicles

for you to bring a camp shower and bush toilets as well as barbeque facilities. There’s only eight sites available to book so it’s usually pretty quiet, stretch out under a tree or roll out the yoga mat and take in the fresh air. There are some shorter hikes and great biking trails that you can take straight from the camp and you can also bring your horse if riding is more your cup of tea and make use of the horse holding yards! If you like the idea of camping but want more of a luxury experience, book a spot at Ivory’s Rock , not far from the start of the Flinders Peak hiking track, they’ve got private bathrooms, powered sites and even simple cabins you can book.

Look closely to see the spotted quail- thrush searching leaf litter for insects and seeds, spotted pardalotes and rainbow bee-eaters – 138 species have been found in the estate. BIRD WATCHING

Ipswich is also the start of the 161km Brisbane Valley Rail Trail . You can hike or bike the trail, an easy day trip is the 22km section from Ipswich to Fernvale. Leave time to stop at the Old Fernvale Bakery for refreshments, before heading back. More than 40 bird species have been recorded along here including Australian wood ducks, rainbow lorikeets, eastern yellow robins and more.

Kholo Gardens is a treasure trove for bird watchers with more than a hundred species found here. See darters, cormorants, kingfishers, ospreys and more. Uncertainties and mayhem over the past couple of years have emphasised more than ever the benefits of getting away from it all and reconnecting with nature. Here are three places to do exactly that – escape from the city and soak up some serenity surrounded by nature. Switch off your screens but maybe bring a camera for those roos and kookaburras at cocktail hour as the sun goes down. 1. Pocket Retreats offer charming bespoke accommodation in two cottages on a working cattle property that feels far from the traffic and pace of modern life. Take in starry skies at night and by day explore this expansive ‘pocket’ with exclusive secluded access to a glass-topped expanse of the Upper Brisbane River. You’ll honestly feel a million miles from it all, yet this special spot is just over an hour from Brisbane.

2. Keira Farm is the place to be if you really want to immerse yourself in nature – in an outdoor tub with views through to Flinders Peak. The famous outdoor bathroom is part of your experience when you opt for the Keira Billy cottage – a fully equipped affair complete with a large fire pit for evenings under the stars. And in case you’re wondering – there’s an indoor bathroom too. There’s also camping, glamping and pre-pitched options if you’re looking to travel with a crowd. Book well in advance for events at nearby Willowbank Raceway such as the famous CMC Rocks QLD. 3. Tallavalley Farm B&B lets you bring your own dog or horse if you want an escape the whole family can enjoy! You’ll stay in a restored farmhouse with adjoining horse paddock and surrounded by pretty gardens and walking tracks – all within a few minutes’ drive to local townships. This quiet retreat allows you to experience the dream of country life and who knows, perhaps you’ll even be inspired to pursue a tree change of your own.

2. Hardings Paddock Campground For a more rustic experience book into Hardings Paddock bush camp right at the doorstep of the Flinders-Goolman

Conservation Estate. Great for bird-watching, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding (BYO horse and bicycle). You will need to bring your own shower bag and drinking water but there are camp loos and shower cubicles available.
