Ipswich’s own award-winning Gin Distillery Imbibis Craft Distillery, is a small business success story worth celebrating with a tasting room and cellar door, and a range of spirits to sample.

Ipswich has its own award-winning boutique craft gin distillery with a tasting room, cellar door and a range of spirits worth sampling. Founded by award-winning winemaker Jason Hannay and his wife, Maree, Imbibis Craft Distillery prides itself on using Australian ingredients in its small, bespoke gin batches, including bottlebrush, lemon myrtle, native pepperberry and anise myrtle, with many ingredients grown in the Hannay’s very own backyard. When it comes to creating distinctive gins and brandy, Imbibis is leading the way. Chief distiller Jason consulted local Imbibis fans to help create Heritage Gin – a nod to the people, places, history and flavours of Ipswich. It sold out in record time, as did Imbibis’ colour-changing Jacaranda Gin – another local favourite. While it all started with gin, Jason has also created several award-winning brandies, and recently launched Limecello, made with local limes and a limited edition rum. They’re open most Fridays (and other days by appointment) for you to enjoy a gin

and tonic while relaxing on the big leather chesterfield couches. Pre-order platters to enjoy while you toast to the week that was and sample the full range of Imbibis delights. The distillery hosts several special events throughout the year, from gin and chocolate tastings through to live music events, paint and sip nights and private functions. 1 – Famous for its steak and endless fries, Bakehouse Steakhouse is in an iconic building which started as Halley’s Bakery in 1874. Inside you’ll find a contemporary space and an extensive cocktail menu. You can find classics as well as bespoke cocktails like the Bakehouse Spritz, Turkish Delight and Salted Caramel Espresso Martini. 2 – For live music performances and art exhibitions, you can’t go past Banshees Bar & Artspace . Why not enjoy karaoke or open mic night with a refreshing cocktail in hand, like the Platypus Punch? 3 – Cocktail of the month at Brothers Leagues Club is where it’s at! Some of the more recent have been Bliss on the Beach, Noble Sun and Australian Tropical Thunder. 4 – The renovated Jets Leagues Club bar has a new cocktail menu including Espresso Martini made with real coffee, Passionfruit Margarita and colourful drinks such as Grasshopper and Fruit Tingle! 5 – Memories of India , located in a beautiful heritage building which was once the old corner pub, has a wide range of cocktails including Strawberry Daiquiri, Passionfruit Mojito and Lemon Margarita.

6 – The Prince Alfred (PA) Hotel is home to the biggest craft beer bar in the Southern Hemisphere and two restaurants. They have plenty of cocktails to choose from too! Try the Fluffy Unicorn, Love Potion, Mint Mocha Martini or FizzyPop. 7 – It’s not just beer that’s great at Pumpyard Bar and Brewery , why not try an Espresso Martini or a cocktail jug? Their delicious menu goes perfectly with a cocktail. 8 – The Sugarmill Restaurant , located in Woodlands of Marburg’s historical mansion has cocktails perfect for a relaxing evening with friends – enjoy the Sugarmill Old Fashioned, a Gatsby Blue Daiquiri or Mary’s Mojito! 9 – The Cottage is a fine dining restaurant set inside a charming heritage Queenslander. With delicious food and cocktails such as Lemon Meringue Pie and Southside made with Ink Gin, it’s no wonder they have won the Australian Good Food Guide’s Readers’ Choice Award for the past six years running! 10 – Le Bond. 007. Heritage PUBS

Pubs are one of the foundations every Queensland city in the late 1800s was built upon. If you’re looking to experience Ipswich’s own historical flavour but not sure where to start, why not check out some of our local venues for a classic pub feed and some frothies! Sit back and enjoy the atmosphere in one of these historical gems.

Jets Leagues Club Originally built in 1880 as the Unity Hotel, then in 1887 after a major renovation changing its name to The Imperial Hotel and then in 1904 Hotel Cecil. The newly refurbished building that is home to Jets Leagues Club demonstrates a mid-Victorian aesthetic.While the outside is untouched, the inside offers many different areas such as a gaming lounge, luxe bar, restaurant, coffee shop and function room. So much more than just your everyday watering hole!

Marburg Hotel This family-owned pub is only 24 minutes from the Ipswich CBD. Not too far at all if you’re looking for that country atmosphere! Enjoy hearty, home-cooked style meals while enjoying the beautiful scenery in a building that is over 140 years old – making it one of Ipswich’s oldest original pubs. Sitting amongst the shopping district, the Marburg Hotel is the go-to food destination if you’re out for a day trip in Marburg!

Pumpyard Bar and Brewery Situated in a 100-year-old building on what was once Ipswich’s first well, Pumpyard is certainly THE place to visit for top quality, locally brewed beer. The menu offers everything from finger food to share plates and everything in between! The building is located in the old Ipswich Technical College at 88 Limestone.

The Prince Alfred Hotel If you’re looking for something for everyone, look no further! The Prince Alfred Hotel has a wide range of options on the menu for adults and children as well as an eye-catching drinks menu. Get in where the food is hot, and the drinks are cold! The hotel was originally built in 1842 and in 1961 it was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1963, and the original cold room from 1842 survived and still stands today.

A bustling morning coffee line of local workers and those like me, who just woke up needing an almond croissant. They also have vegan treats! 2. Pumpyard Bar and Brewery It’s lovely to not have to drive into Brisbane for a gig. Ipswich Improv put on a great show, I love performing or just watching the show there. Come for the comedy, stay for the individual cob loaf on the pub menu. 3. York Street East Ipswich One of my favourite streets in Ipswich is the lush tree lined York Street in East Ipswich. I walk the dogs up here and drool over the big old houses. One day… 4. Clint's Farm Fresh Produce Clint's Farm Fresh Produce is another must visit. They’re only open Friday to Sunday because Clint spends the rest of the week driving out to farms collecting locally grown, top quality produce for his shop. Clint has spray free local veggies, and things you don’t see every day like heirloom tomatoes and cavolo nero. 5. North Ipswich Dog Park I love to grab a coffee and plonk myself down by the river while the dogs have a sniff around the North Ipswich dog park. In summer they can cool off in the boat ramp, then it’s off to Petbarn Booval for a bath.

This is the birthplace of Queensland’s rail history, with more than 200 steam locomotives built here. Many of the original structures like the Timekeepers’ Building and the old boiler shop are still standing. In 2002, the site was transformed into a rail museum with 15 permanent exhibitions and a new Sciencentre . Families can discover full-size locomotive train engines and carriages, a model railway and enjoy the many hands-on activities. As you head into the heart of Ipswich, drop by Queensland’s oldest park. Queens Park was first surveyed in 1842 and has remained a popular spot for families.

On the edge of Queens Park is the Incinerator Theatre . The Incinerator was originally used to burn waste in the 1930s, but it was converted into a performance venue which is used by Ipswich Little Theatre , to present shows. In the Top of Town precinct , you will find more buildings that have stood the test of time from the mid 1800s and early 1900s. All offer a glimpse into a bygone era when people would come to town on a horse and buggy. Highlights along Brisbane Street include The Old Flour Mill , which has undergone many transformations since 1901 when it housed the Ipswich Flour Milling Company, as well as the historic Post and Telegraph Office. Many of Ipswich’s tastiest cafes and restaurants can also be found along this street. The old TAFE College building is just a short stroll away on the corner of Limestone and Ellenborough Streets. This former technical college has been a landmark for more than 100 years, but today you won’t find any classrooms – rather an exciting dining precinct home to Pumpyard Bar and Brewery .

Take a ride on the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway (QPSR) . The train ride takes you past old coal mining sites and run once a month on weekends. It is a Best of Queensland Experience and gives you the chance to ride in a heritage carriage which leaves from the restored Swanbank Station. Spend the afternoon at the Ipswich Art Gallery , wander the exhibitions and if you’re there on school holidays there’s usually an interactive kids’ event to take part in, in the past there’s been Tapescape and Wind Tubes. Take some time to explore Ipswich’s water parks. There are free water play areas at Bob Gamble Park , Ripley Splash ‘n’ Play , Tulmur Place , Orion Lagoon and Robelle Domain . Explore heritage at one of Cooneana Heritage Centre’s open days. These special days feature old timey games like sack racing, feature lost arts like blacksmithing and include heritage bus rides. Sutton Park includes a skate ramp and a track for bikes with stop and go signs, it is also close to The Workshops Rail Museum . The cinema picked up a Best of Queensland Experience badge last year and shows the latest blockbusters as well as old favourites. Head to Elderflower Cafe in North Ipswich for lunch. Next door there is a nursery so parents can pick up a few things for the garden. The cafe is small but packs a mighty punch when it comes to flavours and seasonal menu items.

It also features a silent disco, seedling planting, loose parts play, dancing and more.

There are more and more opportunities becoming available for us to include our pets in day to day life. For someone who lives, breathes, and loves animals, (I also own a dog walking business) here’s a few tips I can share for you and your best friend.

For the outdoorsy fur family It can be difficult to know where to go bush walking, as many places are not allowing pups. However, one great place to go is the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail ! This walk contains gravel trails and paths surrounded by bushland and makes for a great hike even in warmer months as the trees give plenty of shade. While there are two main entrances, I would recommend parking and starting from the Wulkuraka station and heading towards Brassall. This is a decent walk with the round trip about 1 hour and 30 minutes and 7km. Pack both yourself and the fur child, some water and a light lunch as John Murphy Park will be on your left when you reach Brassall and you can sit in the shade for a break and a snack. Just make sure pups remain on leash!

On Wednesdays we brunch! (Pug of coffee) If you’re looking for a more relaxed date with your dog, head to Barkley & Pips at Bundamba. There is a food menu for you both, and a play area for dogs to make new friends. On warmer days, puppy ice cream is available, with puppy-cinos on offer when it’s cold. The human menu has breakfast and lunch and the eggs benny is perfection! Don’t forget to check out the cake selection, so you can both enjoy a sweet treat.

Sunday market day Get out to Main Street at Orion Shopping Centre on the third Sunday of the month with your pooch. Check out a variety of stalls that stretch from one end to the other and maybe pick up a snack or two for your pup. If you’re not lured by market food, there are many dog-friendly cafes and restaurants nearby including Breakfast at Stephanies , Raw Energy and Ballistic Springfield . While pups must remain on-leash at most venues, at the corner of Main Street and Sirius Drive, there is an off-leash dog park!

With easily the best view of Ipswich Central, Lions Lookout is an obvious choice. Results will always be better in the morning or the afternoon, but this is a nice example of the kind of snaps you can get out this way. I shot this panorama with a DSLR fixed 100mm lens, 17 images stitched together.

Joseph Brady Park rests on the intersection between the Bremer and Brisbane river systems. So right off the bat we've got ourselves a deep, wide body of water, still enough to reflect the sky with opposing banks rising out of the depths in varying shades of green. Joseph Brady Park has the ingredients of a top photo spot, with the afternoon sun casting a warm ambience from the west.

Winternationals – Being the home of the biggest drag racing championships outside of North America, a must-do for those visiting our city is a visit to Willowbank Raceway . It’s a rare opportunity to capture motorsport action, an interesting addition to anyone’s Instagram portfolio. The image was captured at the main drag strip at Willowbank during Winternationals, with a super wide 8mm.

Wildlife photography requires time, patience, kit and often a trip to the bush. Unless you're savvy enough to go where a whole arsenal of our most rare and precious animals live... the Ipswich Nature Centre . You too have the power to snap a pic of a spotted- tail quoll as she practices parkour around her enclosure. An animal so rare that most of you will likely never have seen one outside.

This photo is proof that you don't need anything fancy to take some fantastic shots. Taken at Riverheart Parklands in the boardwalk section closest to Bob Gamble Park , a stunning cascade of golden brilliance reflecting down the river at sunset is all you need for the perfect shot. This is the result of some good angles, an iPhone 7 and a favour from the sun.

Well, we're back to Willowbank Raceway for the much beloved country music festival, CMC Rocks QLD . It goes without saying that festival pics are a must when it comes to a well fleshed out Insta profile… So it's convenient that Ipswich hosts Australia's biggest international country music festival.

This one is a hidden gem and unique enough to warrant a mention. The mighty Canberra Bomber of Willowbank is a full sized, decommissioned Vietnam War-era aircraft that sits perched atop its mount, right outside Willowbank Caravan Park . It's a great spot, for a shot of an iconic Aussie warbird.

ACCESSIBILITY TIP Purga Nature Reserve If you love being outdoors in nature, but need a walk that’s smooth, check out Purga Nature Reserve. There is a flat gravel path that leads to boardwalks in the bush. There’s also seating along the way and accessible toilets.

Robelle Domain

The reserve has two Class 2 tracks for easy level walking, including the 350m wheelchair- accessible Tea Tree Boardwalk Circuit, raised high enough to keep your feet dry even if the wetlands have had rain. The longer Melaleuca Circuit is still a fairly short stroll on flat land, and with native herbs, wildflowers and ground covers in place it’s an inviting habitat for birds. There are picnic tables, compost toilets and drinking water available. Denmark Hill Conservation Reserve Once you descend the walking tracks amid huge native trees, you completely forget that you’re in the middle of Ipswich. Denmark Hill is a popular place for bird watchers, with owls, kookaburras, wrens, finches and others making their homes here. You have a choice of walking circuits that range from 200m–800m. It’s a relaxing walk down to the picnic area where you venture into a children’s playground with swings, climbing

Flinders–Goolman Conservation Estate A range of recreational activities are on offer to visitors in the Flinders–Goolman Conservation Estate including bird watching, hiking, mountain bike and horse riding (bring your own bike or horse). The conservation estate covers just over 2,200ha and supports extensive forests and rugged volcanic peaks and slopes including Flinders Peak, Mt Blaine, Mt Catherine and Mt Goolman. The two entrances to the estate, Hardings Paddock and Flinders Plum picnic areas have picnic tables and public toilets. At Hardings Paddock you’ll also find an Aboriginal Totem walk, bush tucker trail and traditional resource gardens, yarning circle and traditional Kupmurri Pit. The Kupmurri can be reserved by Traditional Owners to pass down cultural knowledge and practices to descendants on Country as well as by Indigenous not-for-profit organisations to run cultural educational programs. Purga Nature Reserve For a unique nature walk just 15 minutes from the CBD, Purga Nature Reserve is a peaceful getaway. It has the largest remnant of swamp tea tree protected in Australia, and there are short, self- guided walks amid the ghostly, ashen trees that are truly spectacular.
