Message from Ipswich Mayor, Teresa Harding
With plenty going on during the cold months to keep you warm this winter, I’m very excited to welcome you to the latest Ipswich in Winter. Our lovely sunny winter days and crisp evenings are the perfect time to get out and explore our beautiful region, attend an event, take in a show or experience something new. Ipswich comes alive in Winter and this year the Ipswich Art Gallery Foundation are celebrating 25 years of purchasing art of cultural significance to add to the Ipswich Art Gallery collection. The 25 YEARS: The Ipswich Art Gallery Foundation large-scale exhibition is on now. Spark Ipswich returns from 7 to 17 July featuring day and night events for everyone, with music, comedy, arts, circus, technology shows, children’s festival and more on the program. The 2022 program will deliver fresh new festival content, visit Ipswich Festivals website for more information. The Festival of Horsepower gallops in June, a month-long program packed full of horsepower-fuelled adrenaline from drag racing at the Gulf Western Oil Winternationals on 9 to 12 June to horse racing at the TAB Ipswich Cup on the 18 June. This Winter showcases cycling, mountain biking and trail running events to suit the whole family. Or get active with an outdoor class as part of the council’s experiences and courses on offer too including Knife Making, Tea Tasting Experience, Jamie’s Ministry of Food program, Didgeridoo Jams and so much more. Tulmur Place comes alive with the twilight markets, handmade expo market, food trucks, live music, yoga classes and there are also children activities held each school holidays. You also won’t go hungry while exploring Ipswich. You can eat and drink your way around the city from fine dining, boutique breweries to coffee and brunch at one of Ipswich’s many tasty cafes. MODERN TECHNOLOGY TO REVEAL ANCIENT SECRETS
Ipswich’s oldest cemetery burials are being mapped for the first time through the use of ground penetrating radar. The innovative use of technology is part of a council project to redesign some of Ipswich General Cemetery that was razed by the Cemetery Trustee in the 1970s. Unfortunately, there are limited records of burials from this time. Graves in the historic Ipswich General Cemetery date back to the mid-1840s. Burials in the oldest part of the cemetery were organised into cultural and religious groups including a designated area for First Nations people who we do have some burial records of, from as far back as the 1880s.
Sadly, many of the headstones have been removed or destroyed when they were moved from their original location in the 1970s by cemetery trustees who cleared the site to reduce maintenance costs. There are also many unmarked graves and we want to hear from anyone who has any information around who may be buried there. The Ipswich General Cemetery Heritage Project will develop a conceptual design for a new area to re-house and integrate the existing memorials into a new landscape as well as to consider new internment opportunities for cremains.

320 YEARS OF COUNCIL EXPERIENCE RECOGNISED
CEO Sonia Cooper with Dale Hubner, celebrating his 40 years of service with Ipswich City Council
“I have been a labourer, a truck driver, a carpenter and a carpenter supervisor, and now I am a project manager,” Dale said. “Back when I started, the Thorn Street Depot was the main depot for council; it included the ambulance and SES area and housed the entire council workforce – from road gangs to sign writers – plus the mechanical workshop and blacksmith shed. “The carpenters, painters, and plumbers’ workshop ran alongside and had been converted from horse stables.” Ipswich City Council currently employs more than 1,200 people across a range of industries and delivering a wide range of services to the Ipswich community.
The year was 1982. Joh Bjelke-Peterson was the Premier of Queensland; work had just started on Wivenhoe Dam; a loaf of bread cost 77 cents; and Bundamba man, Dale Hubner, started a new job at Ipswich City Council. Forty years on, and Dale attends a barbecue breakfast at the Riverview Depot to celebrate the long service and dedication of 12 Infrastructure and Environment Department employees, who have together racked up 320 years as council officers. Now a Capital Delivery Branch Project Manager, Dale said he has worn many hats in his time at council.

HOTELIER TAKES REINS OF ICONIC IPSWICH PUB
Ipswich’s much-loved Commonwealth Hotel will continue to be revitalised in the $250 million Nicholas Street Precinct after AusHotels signed on as the new operator of the iconic pub. The hotel will act as an anchor for the Nicholas Street Precinct attracting additional visitors and diners to Ipswich Central. This is a pivotal moment in the Nicholas Street Precinct redevelopment that council has been working towards. While the Commonwealth Hotel has been meticulously restored to maintain its heritage façade, the forthcoming extension of the hotel will transform the site into a state-of-the- art dining and entertainment hub.
The Commonwealth Hotel, also known as Murphy’s Pub, was built over a century ago and extensive plans for the redevelopment include indoor and outdoor dining, a feature cocktail bar, beer garden and function rooms, while keeping its classic and authentic persona at its core. The reopened hotel will draw more people to the precinct and bolster future trade. Importantly, it will help reactivate the night-time economy in the Nicholas Street Precinct and complement the precinct’s other new offerings.

Local gardeners and avid green thumbs will soon more easily spot invasive plants when council launches a new book to support community identification of environmental weeds impacting Ipswich. Council developed the Invasive Weeds of Ipswich book and field guide as an up-to-date resource to empower residents to identify weeds and take appropriate actions. Invasive weeds come in many forms, from small delicate daisy-like flowers to large trees covered in massive thorns, to scrambling vines many metres high. What they have in common is that they compete with native vegetation for nutrients, light and space. INVASIVE WEEDS CATALOGUED IN NEW BOOK AND FIELD GUIDE
Invasive weeds disturb the balance of natural systems, causing damage to conservation areas, waterways and reducing food and habitat for native animals. Community education and action makes a big difference in controlling invasive weeds. The new book and field guide will be available for the Ipswich community at the Queens Park Environmental Education Centre.

BOYD MEETS GIRL
ILLUMINATIONS: CAMERATA – QUEENSLAND’S CHAMBER ORCHESTRA French chic meets British refinement in Illuminations, where Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra performs classic works by Elgar, Debussy, and Britten. Soprano Sofia Troncoso joins Camerata for Britten’s “Les Illuminations”. A bright and vivid song cycle, “Les Illuminations” pairs Sofia’s “impressive… powerful voice” (Limelight Magazine) with some of the most glorious and moving string sounds that you will hear. Coupled with the deeply sensual French poetry of Rimbaud, Britten’s song cycle with its sparkling orchestral sounds and divine vocal lines expresses sheer beauty. DATE Friday 8 July TIME 7.30 pm VENUE Ipswich Civic Centre COST Adults – $60 Student – $50
Boyd Meets Girl pairs Australian classical guitarist Rupert Boyd with American cellist Laura Metcalf. Songs of Love & Despair is the second album from the husband-and-wife duo; an album of love, despair and some things in between. Largely conceived, arranged, rehearsed and recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic, Songs of Love & Despair contains the music that we were drawn to during this time - a time of unprecedented stillness and solitude, travelling at most a few kilometres from home for months on end. This collection of repertoire is half love, half longing; from the delicate beauty of Debussy and the joyousness of Boccherini, to the anguish of Messiaen and heartbreaking Appalachian folk songs, which tell stories of love, life and loss. DATE Friday 15 July TIME 7.30 pm (60 minute performance) VENUE St Mary’s Church Elizabeth Street, Woodend COST Adults – $20 Concession – $15
